The “Purple People Eater” was spotted cruising through the Brainerd Fourth of July parade, smoking and spitting water at the crowd. Sponsored by Range Manufacturing, Crosby Bar and T Signs, the float captured the “best in parade” award. Floats by Range Mfg. have won the award four straight years.
30 years ago (1991)
Brainerd's Steve Nunnink has been named an MEA 1991 Honor Roll Teacher, putting him in the final round for Minn. Teacher of the Year honors. The Brainerd High School biology and sports medicine teacher was selected from a group of 96 nominees. Final selection is in September.
40 years ago (1981)
(Adv.) Stephen Hanske, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine, joined the current physicians of Brainerd Medical Center on July 6. Dr. Clark Zard joined the dental practice of Dr. Robert Kaspar at the end of April. He is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus and the Univ. of Minn. Dental School.

East Gull Lake residents, aware of their air transport problems, see significance in having Gov. Elmer Andersen dedicate their new 2,500-foot grass landing strip July 7 at 7:30 p.m. It was 25 years ago that the same spot beside the county road was used by a three-engine plane to pick up critically ill Gov. Floyd B. Olson and fly him to Rochester.

Solomon Lemay, his wife and three children, motored from Rhode Island to Brainerd, a distance of 1,840 miles, to visit his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Eber Baker. They arrived in time to celebrate July 4th here, following a trip that had no mechanical failures nor even a single tire blowout or puncture.
