The Lake Hubert Depot is the only open air railway station remaining in the U.S. Built in 1918 by the NP Railway just as the resort industry here was beginning to boom, it welcomed rail passengers who then transferred to cars or boats to reach area resorts. But it needs $22,000 in structural repairs or it will surely fall down.

Marijuana-growing operations featuring sophisticated farming methods were raided by state agents in north-central Minnesota. Four Ohio men were arrested and in federal custody, and 5,000 marijuana plants worth $12.5 million were destroyed. Sites included a very remote area of Cass County.
40 years ago (1981)
A state-wide strike by government employees that began at midnight has trimmed services to the essentials. Hardest hit was the Brainerd State Hospital, but the strike also affected the local MnDOT office, the State Patrol and Crow Wing State Park. All are limping along using supervisory personnel.

The five persons who survived Brainerd's most horrible accident a week ago “are better today,” according to the physician in charge at St. Joseph's Hospital. The five survivors are from Minneapolis and Nebraska. The other five passengers in the two cars were killed on Hwy 371 south.
100 years ago (1921)
Brainerd was treated to a thrill last night after sufficient money was raised. McElliot, a skilled flier, reached a height of 3,000 feet over the city and a parachute jumper leaped out. He intended to drop into the business district but landed in a tree in Gregory Park near George LaBar's house. Provision had been made to fish him from the Mississippi if needed.
