A downpour of rain may have caused the annual Relay for Life to shut down the fund-raising event by 10 p.m. last Friday, but the event still raised $135,000 for the Amer. Cancer Society, the same as last year. Co-chair Kathy Buxton said 724 walkers on 60 teams participated despite the rain.

Opponents of the state's aerial spraying of chemicals in forests will rally in Gregory Park on Aug. 1 as the spray program moves into the Brainerd area. Pat Pomeroy and Gary Payne, members of the local opponent group, have gathered signed petitions against the use of 2-4-D on area forest lands.

60 years ago (1961)

Police today investigated vandalism done to a room at the Elks Hotel last night. The desk clerk reported that two young men rented the room last night and were later warned of excessive noise. This morning two beds were torn apart, a lamp broken and toothpaste squirted everywhere. It appears they left via the fire escape – without paying.

80 years ago (1941)

Over 200 local men crowded into the tiny offices of the Minn. Employment Service to hear about employment opportunities to build defense bases in Newfoundland, Canada. According to the man doing the hiring, he's looking only for highly skilled workers, who must have proof of citizenship and pass a physical exam.

100 years ago (1921)

There is some mixup over the telephone numbers at the new court house. The Dispatch has been informed that many of these are temporary numbers and will be replaced soon. When the permanent numbers are assigned, the Dispatch will publish them and you can paste the new numbers over the old in your phone book.
