With the summer heat and humidity deflating everyone's spirits, 14 girls found the relief they needed as well as a chance to show off their hockey skills. The Minnesota Northern Lights, with players from Brainerd, Cloquet, Aitkin and C-I, will compete in the International Hockey Cup in Blaine.
30 years ago (1991)
The sheriff's office marked two armed robberies within seconds of each other, but far apart. A man with a rifle entered the Pines pro shop at Grand View Lodge at 9:54 p.m. He escaped with $991 in cash, firing a shot when outside. At the same time, two men got $2,000 cash by holding up the bartender at Seguchie Lodge on Mille Lacs lake.
40 years ago (1981)
Generosity by their Minnesota opponents may have aided Michigan's win in the BASS Federation fishing tourney at Gull Lake. Grant Hendrickson, Michigan, was paired in a boat with Duane Peterson of Minn. When a 2-pound- plus bass spit the hook, Peterson still netted it for him. Michigan won with a total of 135.9 pounds to Minnesota's 132.15.
60 years ago (1961)
(Photo) In just two days, the King's Sports Shop fishing contest had a new leader in the largemouth bass division. The previous leader, at 5-3, was displaced by this 5-9 specimen caught in Wise Lake by Orville Hoch of Waterloo, Iowa. He hooked it on a frog bait.
80 years ago (1941)
A former Brainerd resident, John Atherton, has won both first and second prizes in the National Defense Bond poster contest. Atherton, who graduated from high school here in 1916, lives in Connecticut and does business as an illustrator in New York City.
100 years ago (1921)
Every section of Brainerd is anxious to have the Municipal Band play there and the council is besieged with such requests. The only solution may be to revert to the old days when there was a band wagon that allowed portable music throughout the city. The old one burned up in the great downtown fire; perhaps it's time for a new one.
