Mankato had Brainerd's number at the State VFW Tournament in Mankato last weekend. Brainerd lost to Mankato in the opening game, then trudged through the losers bracket, beating Fergus Falls, St. Paul Ranview and Golden Valley. Facing Mankato again, Brainerd lost 12-5 to finish in third place.

30 years ago (1991)

At the request of county attorney Jack Graham, charges have been dropped against two figures in the BITC fraud case. Manly Israel was charged with conspiring to obtain $$48,000 in city guaranteed loans. Larry Frankhauser faced charges of conspiring to get the city to issue $1.7 million in TIF bonds.

40 years ago (1981)

A dazzling display of Chinese culture was presented in Brainerd last night as a troupe of 30 children from Taiwan put on a spectacular program of athletic and artistic talents. Dressed in native costumes, the children performed for a state teachers conference at the high school.

60 years ago (1961)

(Photo) The Gull Lake Yacht Club recently obtained five acres on Gull Lake from Walter Wieland, a club member. Since then a road has been built into the property, the beach cleared and a 120-foot dock installed. The yacht club will host its first annual invitational sailing regatta next week.

80 years ago (1941)

The foreman at the Russell Creamery Co. suffered severe burns on his face and hands late last night when the ammonia in compression tanks escaped in the plant at 504 Front Street. The gas escape caused residents in the apartments above the plant to flee, and persons living within two blocks also fled.

100 years ago (1921)

More orders are wanted for picric acid, which is to be used by farmers for blowing stumps. County agent Roth says orders thus far received from farmers amount to 12,000 pounds. An additional 8,000 pounds must be subscribed to get the rail car delivered here for 10 cents a pound. Local bankers will assist farmers with financing.
