20 years ago (2001)

The name Weiss was constantly on the public address system as the Warriors topped St. Cloud Apollo 44-23 in their season opener. Mike Weiss, senior linebacker, scored two TDs and recovered a fumble. His brother Fred, also a linebacker, recovered a fumble and made an interception. Chad Weiss, also a linebacker, but no relation, ran an interception for a TD.

30 years ago (1991)

Two of the five county commissioner districts are significantly out of whack in population. Thus, next year's election will find most – if not all – commissioners up for election. Auditor Roy Luukkonen said Mary Koep's district is up by 23.1 percent, while Barb Uppgaard's increased 6.28 percent. The other three went up less than 1 percent.

40 years ago (1981)

Acting on a grand jury subpoena, the sheriff's office has seized Water & Light Dept. records as they investigate potential sale of scrap copper wire where proceeds may not have been deposited into city accounts. Sgt. Frank Ball said they were acting on a citizen's tip into the sale of thousands of pounds of copper.

60 years ago (1961)

(Advs.) Who is playing at local night spots: At the Winnipeg Bar it's Swaser's Ramblers; at Tank's 21 Club dance to the Rum River Boys; at Shing Wako Resort listen to the Brainerd Ramblers; and new managers Bruce and Maxine Tanhoff invite you to hear Jolly John and his Jolly Musicians at the Green Lantern.

80 years ago (1941)

First place at the state fair in three corn divisions was won by entries of B.C. (Bernie) Wilkins of Star Route, Brainerd. Ranked best in the state were his white hybrid corn, yellow hybrid corn and open pollinated. He had won numerous prizes at county fairs, but this was his first state win.

100 years ago (1921)

Dotty and Ted Stallman and family made a record day's run in their Nash, traveling 343 miles from Aberdeen, S.D. to Brainerd, via Wahpeton. Ted and Dotty shared time behind the wheel and they encountered no engine or tire trouble.
