Jud Weaver, a 1984 Brainerd High grad, was working in a building opposite the World Trade Center towers when the planes hit on Sept. 11. Jud, the son of Dr. John and Ruth Anne Weaver of Brainerd, ran for his life when the towers fell. Luck blessed him and he was covered in soot but otherwise unhurt when the twin towers crashed.

Bernie Koering and Bob Thompson keep the lights on and the water running for Brainerd's Water and Light Dept. They completed more than $500,000 of work this summer. Koering and his crew have installed 8,500 feet of electrical lines, while Thompson's crew installed 6,400 feet of water mains, some of it eight feet below ground.

(Photo) A $225 gift from the Brainerd Women's Club has purchased a film file cabinet for the Brainerd Library's Recordak film reader. The Recordak and a complete set of microfilms of the newspaper were furnished by the Dispatch. Three members of the Library Board are shown with Caye Ebert of the Women's Club.
80 years ago (1941)
Crow Wing county's tax levy for 1941 is $16,600 less than last year. In addition, the county's bonded indebtedness will be paid off by year's end, leaving the county debt-free for the first time in 20 years. The $16,600 savings is the amount that the county has levied each year to pay off its bonds.
100 years ago (1921)
John Wahl, driving his car east of Deerwood, was trying to do two things at once and was unsuccessful. He was driving his car and trying to keep his dog in the auto when he collided with two trees and went down an embankment. Wahl cut his hands, the car was dented and the dog jumped free.
