Brainerd angler Bill Ludenia took first place out of a field of 195 in the Minn. B.A.S.S. Federation tournament of champions, Sept. 7 on Gull Lake. Ludenia, who has fished competitively for 16 years, caught 10 largemouth weighing 28.54 pounds, with the largest at 5.1 pounds. The Range Bassmasters took first out of 40 teams in the tournament.

30 years ago (1991)

Turena Johnson of the Warrior cross country team won her first individual title of the season, running the 3,200-meter course at the Pierz Golf Club in 12:15. Teammate Jaime Mueller finished second in 12:45, as the two runners led Brainerd to a second-place team finish in the Pierz Pioneer Stampede.

40 years ago (1981)

Wayne Caughey, Brainerd grad who played third base for Albequerque as they rolled to their second Pacific Coast title, enjoyed a great season. He hit .315 at the the plate and committed only eight errors. Despite this, the 27-year-old wasn't called up by the parent LA Dodgers, so he doesn't know what their plans are for him.

60 years ago (1961)

Though he lost the individual golf title in a 1-up match-play setback, Brainerd Junior College's Chuck Chalberg was tournament medalist with a 216 score. In team competition, he shot 116 for 27 holes, and teamed with Pete Brandt at 118, to take the 7th Annual JUCO Team title.

80 years ago (1941)

Possibility of a community chest, whose board would supervise a single annual fund drive to raise funds for a half dozen charities, was discussed at a Jaycee meeting at the Winnipeg last night. The plan, suggested by Les Hage, would raise funds for the YMCA, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, etc. It will be discussed further with the Civic Assn.

100 years ago (1921)

Public sentiment in Brainerd and the area is in accord with that of Charles Babcock, state highway commissioner. He and others are urging Congress to double federal highway aid to enable the state to continue highway work during the winter. This would help relieve the pressing unemployment situation.
