20 years ago (2001)

Flooding problems at the Northland Arboretum have forced Baxter to push up scheduled infrastructure work. Trevor Walter, Baxter public works, said problems started three weeks ago when beavers plugged up a culvert between two ponds, washing out walking paths and taking out a bridge.

30 years ago (1991)

In a letter to the county board, county attorney Jack Graham withdrew his earlier intent to resign. In discussion that followed, Graham and the board agreed that current state law requiring such vacancies be filled by appointment should be changed to special elections. A motion was passed to that effect.

40 years ago (1981)

Several cases of head lice have been reported this fall in Brainerd schools, according to school officials. If head lice are discovered at school, parents will be asked to take the child and any siblings home. They must contact a physician for treatment and students will not be allowed back in school until treatment is completed.

60 years ago (1961)

Gordie Coleman, slugging first baseman of the Cincinnati Reds, will be appearing in his first World Series against the NY Yankees. Brainerd fans will remember him as a member of the semi-pro Brainerd Braves in 1951 and 1952. He batted .344 and .419 those years at ages 17 and 18. Brainerd's records were 28-9 and 31-6 when he played.

80 years ago (1941)

(Photo) This photo is testament to a successful opening of the duck season – at least for Brainerd Patrolman Louis Rofidal. At left is Toby, Rofidal's cocker spaniel, who did the retrieving; then the ten bluebills he brought in; finally, the 12-gauge shotgun the sharp-shooting Rofidal used. He bagged the ducks by 7:40 a.m. at Red Sand Lake.

100 years ago (1921)

Reports say that they are running short of ice in Little Falls and have gotten down to the last layers in the ice house. Some of this ice was put up 14 years ago and is now a solid mass, requiring sawing into chunks in order to extract it.
