Bob Gross served as superintendent of the Brainerd school district for 18 years, before taking the top job at the American School in Singapore. When his fourth-grade teacher stepped down, he called Patti Uppgaard, fourth-grade teacher at Lowell School to see if she was interested. She leaves Oct. 19 on a two-year contract.
30 years ago (1991)
Dick Endres, founder and long-time director of Confidence Learning Center on Sylvan Lake, has been appointed interim director. He will fill the position until a permanent replacement can be found for Dick Mans, who recently left. Endres says the board has already formed a search committee.
40 years ago (1981)
Hard running by tailback Nolan Beverly brought 134 yards and three TDs, as Fergus Falls topped Brainerd Community College 34-18. The BCC passing game saw QB Dave Webber throw for two TDs and halfback Don Weiss throw for another off a fake field goal. But the Raiders also saw 15 of 23 attempted passes fall incomplete.
60 years ago (1961)
State employees at the Badoura Nursery, about 65 miles northwest of here, have begun their annual program of extracting seeds from cones. A total of 4,000 to 5,000 cones from spruce, jackpine, white and Norway pine are used. Both state employees and private parties gather the cones which are shipped there by truck.

William J. McCollough of 708 Fir Street will join 27 other county men as they leave by chartered bus for Ft. Snelling for induction into the Army on Oct. 13. He was scheduled for induction Oct. 7 in Palo Alto, Calif., where he was registered while attending Stanford Univ. He was able to get his papers transferred here to his home county.
100 years ago (1921)
All members of the water and light board were present when a delegation from West Brainerd asked for electric power on the north side of the railroad tracks. Cost is estimated at $1,000. The board said if the delegation will loan it $500 until the first of the year – at interest – the board will do the work then.
