It was an emotional night as Jim and Lynn Nelson said goodbye as owners of North Central Speedway at the annual banquet for drivers. Season champs were: Mark Olson, Brainerd, in NCMS Pure Stock; Dave Mass, Brainerd, in Wissota Street Stock; Chuck Olson, Coon Rapids, in Wissota Midwest Modified; and Ed Jensen, Brainerd, in Wissota Super Stock.

30 years ago (1991)

The Warrior girls' cross country team took a huge stride when it made it to state for the first time with a second-place finish in Region 8AA. Turena Johnson won her third race of the season and took her third consecutive section title, and will be joined at state individually by Jaime Mueller, who finished fifth.

60 years ago (1961)

Georgia's Dress Shop, a fixture on South 6th Street, has been sold by owner Mrs. Hal (Georgia) Masem, who has owned it for 23 years. Buyers are Mr. and Mrs. Jake Prindle, Aitkin, who lived in Brainerd for 13 years. Mrs. Prindle plans no changes to staff, though her daughter, Pat, will join her in the spring.

80 years ago (1941)

Mantoux tests to determine which students react positively for tuberculosis began this morning in Brainerd schools as part of a county-wide program directed by the Minn. Public Health Assn. Tests are given to students in kindergarten, first seventh and twelfth grades. Those who test positive go to the Deerwood Sanitarium for x-rays.

100 years ago (1921)

The villages of Crosby and Deerwood became linked together with a ribbon of cement on Oct. 8, and the county commissioners will be there on Oct. 29 to inspect and open the road. The 3.5 mile road, 18 feet in width, had 100 men and six trucks laying 400 feet of concrete a day to a depth of 7.5 inches.
