20 years ago (2001)

The Warrior girls' swim team lost the Section 8AA tournament by a razor-thin margin to Elk River, but 10 Warriors will go to state. Chief among them is Cori Severson, who won the 50 and 100 free races and swam anchor on the 200 and 400 free relays. She was named top swimmer of the meet. Last year she won the same four races and was MVP as well.

30 years ago (1991)

A Brainerd man found driving on icy roads didn't “warrant” the risk. The man's car slid into Deputy Butch Peterson's squad car, doing $3,500 in damage. Peterson is the county's warrants officer and, while writing the ticket, discovered the man had a warrant for driving after revocation of license. He was arrested – and cited for having no insurance.

40 years ago (1981)

It ended quietly after a five-year struggle to keep its head above water. In a brief statement, Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Brainerd said its program has disbanded and its 47 matches are officially terminated. It had operated without a director since Sept. 18 when the board terminated Gary Kroeger due to lack of funding.

60 years ago (1961)

(Photo) A new queen reigns over Brainerd. Marie Adolphson became Miss Brainerd when the current queen, Bonnie Lee Anderson, stepped down to prepare for a Dec. 2 wedding. Miss Adolphson is a sophomore at Brainerd Junior College. At Washington High School she was a cheerleader, honor grad with distinction and editor of the Pow Wow newspaper.

80 years ago (1941)

Back from his fourth extended trip in the interests of locating a manganese treatment plant on the Cuyuna Range, Carl Zapffe, in charge of NP Railroad ore properties, had this to report. The plant would cost $6 million, but no plant has been designated and no site chosen. The plant would process 600,000 tons of ore per year.

100 years ago (1921)

Something akin to the feeling Napoleon had when he waited to take on Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo must have crossed the minds of Brainerd High School when they played football yesterday at Little Falls. They were repeatedly charged by Little Falls, but could not penetrate their defense. Final score: Little Falls 58, Brainerd 0.
