Bob Nystrom collected the most votes yesterday to earn a spot on the Brainerd school board. Incumbents Lew Hudson and Bernie Roberts took the other two seats up for a vote. It was Nystrom's first run for any office. He is a life-long resident and owned Nystrom Drug for 15 years. He has three children in district schools.

The old building at the corner of 5th and Laurel Streets apparently has a special place in the hearts of Brainerd voters. By a margin of 8-to-1, voters approved the referendum to renovate city hall and make it comply with building codes. But the vote, 831 to 154, represented only 16 percent of registered voters.

The Warriors, with an inspired 2-1 victory over Little Falls, move to the semi-finals of the South Sub-Region 8AA volleyball tournament. Brainerd dropped the first game 15-18, but came back to win 18-15, 18-14. Coach Carol Chamberlain said she has not had a chance to scout top-seeded Rocori, Brainerd's next opponent.

Baxter's school board, told seven years ago that the most classrooms they could add were two, learned last night the state board of education says they can add up to six classrooms to their elementary school. Baxter must now decide whether to build a new expanded school, or seek attachment or consolidation with Brainerd's district.
80 years ago (1941)
Seven frightened children and their bewildered parents are without a home, or food, or furniture and no clothes except what they're wearing after a fire destroyed their three-room house in northwest Brainerd. The father, a garbage collector, vows he will build another house. But for now, they need everything.
100 years ago (1921)
A Dispatch reporter toured the new four-story Northwestern Hospital, now being constructed here, with its architect and engineer and its president and chief surgeon Dr. Joseph Nicholson. It employs a new overhead vacuum system of heating from a separate power plant. Construction is expected to be complete by Jan. 1.
