In the state Class 2AA swimming finals, Cori Severson placed fifth in 24.76 to be named all-state and Katie Diiro placed 13th for the Warriors. Severson also swam the consolation finals of the 100 free, placing 13th. In the 200 free relay, Severson, Diiro, Amanda Bateman and Jael Collins swam a 1:41.26 to finish seventh and gain all-state honors.

30 years ago (1991)

The elusive Brainerd bypass is nearer reality than ever before. James Dean, newly appointed commissioner of MnDOT, said the project had made the statewide list of major projects for 1996. It could be pushed back by funding issues, but not off the list. Dean was speaking at the open house of the new MnDOT facility in Baxter.

40 years ago (1981)

MnDOT, under siege for violating regulations in spraying herbicide at the Brainerd-Crow Wing County Airport last September has come through its first investigation tarnished, but largely in the clear. Soil samples taken at the airport showed only minute traces of the herbicide. Opponents called the state report a conflict of interest.

60 years ago (1961)

Jack Krueger, custodian at the Garrison School, raises plants in his cafeteria flower garden. But he has one that has its seasons mixed up. An Easter lily is more than a few months ahead of schedule, being in full bloom right now. Krueger, 75, is the father of Sheriff Al Krueger.

80 years ago (1941)

The Brainerd Sportsmen Club is calling for a mass meeting tomorrow night at the Moose Hall to protest the recent state order closing all lakes in the Whitefish chain to the spearing of rough fish this winter. Carl Wright of the Brainerd club says that petitions are being circulated. He also said that State Rep. Charles Halsted will attend the meeting.

100 years ago (1921)

Due to the initiative of the auditor of the M&I Railway, who went to St. Paul to make the case, the Brainerd Elks have secured a special train to take members to the large initiation at Crosby-Ironton on Nov. 23. The train leaves Brainerd at 5:30, with the round trip fare at $1.62. To cover the guarantee, 150 tickets must be sold.
