Some people call it "Paul Bunyan's flashlight." Built over four years - 1919 to 1922 - Brainerd's landmark water tower faced destruction in 1968. The city council voted 4-2 to tear it down, but a committee headed by George Bedard raised money and saved it. "It's a keepsake," he said.

Water usage may have to be curtailed this summer in Brainerd if the city's old water treatment facility, currently shut down, can't be repaired or replaced. The new facility runs 4 million gallons a day - enough for winter use, but not enough to cover the 7 million gallon summer usage.

A Cass County court hearing has been scheduled concerning Michael Thayer's removal of his seven children from Pillager schools. Thayer alleged that his children were subject to ridicule from a teacher and that a teacher slandered Thayer's wife. The school denies the complaint.

A Minneapolis man, formerly from Brainerd, had to pay extra when he was brought to Municipal Court today on a drunk driving charge from four years ago. He was fined $100 plus $4 costs on the charge, then $25 for failure to appear plus another $35 in costs for the sheriff to bring him here.

F. H. Anderson, 87, died March 25 at his home in Emily after being in poor health all winter. He was a veteran of the Indian Wars, serving under Gen. George Armstrong Custer. He leaves two sons, one of whom is county commissioner A. Frank Anderson.

The Brainerd City Band, represented by 30 musicians, will appear in the first annual band contest to be held in St. Paul this summer. P.T. Lincoln, secretary of the Brainerd Chamber, secured the invitation when he was in St. Paul. Bandmaster R.H. Rehl says the band is enthusiastic about appearing.
