The Brainerd School Board tackled a sometimes touchy subject, adopting the school district’s first sex education curriculum. The program, to start this fall, will be taught to kindergarten through ninth grade students. The decision follows a year-long study.

Dean Trzpuc, director of the Brainerd High School band, announced that oboist Arlene Clementson and flutist Anne Larson have been selected for the American Youth Symphonic Band which will tour Europe for three weeks this summer.
60 years ago (1954)
Three youths living near Brainerd admitted to breaking into 35 cars in Brainerd, Crosby and Ironton. Few items were recovered. Police said a series of gasoline thefts and cabin break-ins were also solved when the three boys implicated 11 others, as well.

The Rotary Club held its regular meeting at the St. Francis Church and heard Father Hogan speak on church architecture in connection with the new church. Ed Tom O’Brien was introduced as a new member of the Rotary Club. Church ladies served the lunch.
100 years ago (1914)
Claus Theorin, for seven years a deputy sheriff, having served three terms under Sheriff F.J. Reid, will file tomorrow for the office of sheriff. Sheriff Reid has chosen not to run for another term and will move to his farm and other business interests.
