Randy Mertes of Brainerd won the 200-pound division of the 40-44 age group in the Masters Weightlifting Championships in Dallas. Competing against more than 30 lifters, he snatched 242 pounds and clean-and-jerked 320 pounds, the latter a national record.

The Minnesota State Fair is looking for 86 bright young farm boys, ages 16-19, wishing a free trip to the state fair. One boy from each county will win the trip, based on submitting the best essay on corn, clover, alfalfa or livestock. The supt. of county schools is judge.
