That old nemesis of utilities, stormy weather, was the suspected cause of a power outage for 6,000 Crow Wing Co-op customers. But by late morning the co-op found the villain was an osprey that built a nest on a utility line tower. When the sticks got wet, it shorted the line.

(Photo) The Fifty Twosomes, a former Brainerd area dance club, will hold an alumni dance at Cragun’s to the ‘50s music of “Captain and the Crew.” There will be 43 couples attending, including Bob and Joyce Turcotte, the only charter members from 1953.

(Photo) An estimated $7,500 damage was done to the Northern Propane Gas bldg., 208 Washington St., when an 18-year-old man’s car went out of control as he made a left-turn onto Washington from N. 2nd Street. The car was a total wreck but the driver wasn’t injured.

Dan Campbell, band director at Washington High School, told the school board he’d “look for something else” if his plans for improving the music department are not accepted. “I’m tired of knocking my head against a stone wall,” he said.

Martha Ostenso, noted author and operator of a turkey farm on the west side of Gull Lake near Brainerd, had her luggage stolen from a car in front of a Chicago hotel a few days ago. Luckily, the thieves missed the manuscript for her latest book, which was in the car.
100 years ago (1914)
The town of Barrows will be supplied with a Northern Pacific agent who will have charge of express, freight and passenger service. He will also give the town wire service.
