The first ever Lakes Bluegrass Festival comes at the right time for Ski Gull, a non-profit ski facility that is facing a budget shortfall. Ski Gull will host the three-day festival, featuring one national and eight regional bands, at its lakefront grounds on CR 77. Proceeds after expenses hope to make up part of the $70,000 budget shortfall.

Brainerd native Todd Revenig earned his 31st save of the season in the Class AA Huntsville Stars 7-2 win over Memphis. He ranks second behind Jerry Spradlin, whose recent 32nd save set a new Southern League record. Revenig owns a 1.80 ERA, has given up 31 hits in 60 innings and has opponents batting just .150 against him.
40 years ago (1982)
Brisk winds and two-to-three-foot waves slowed Gail Avenson, 27, but didn't stop her from swimming 21 miles across Mille Lacs Lake on Saturday, the equivalent of swimming across the English Channel. She started at midnight in Isle and finished at 5 p.m. at Garrison. The event was held in conjunction with Garrison's Walleye Festival.

The new ski hill area near Gull Lake will hold a grand opening on Thanksgiving Day. Work on the hill had been halted for a complete survey, but that has been completed and work contracts have been let and work resumed. The hill was originally named Mt. Ski Gull, but has now been changed to Ski Gull Mountain.
80 years ago (1942)
Ben Taylor, coach of Brainerd's high school football team, and phy ed instructor at Washington High School since 1930, has been called to active duty as a captain in the Ordinance Corps. Taylor notified the school board of his activation today. He is not yet sure when he will leave for duty.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
