A dozen ethanol plants in Minnesota, including the one near Little Falls, are negotiating with pollution control regulators to settle alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Plants have been found to emit more pollutants than earlier believed, causing neighbors to complain of odors, headaches, nausea and irritated eyes and throats.

What Smokey Bear says about forest fires also goes for speed limits as well – only YOU can reduce them. At a public meeting, MnDOT officials agreed to an experimental 45 mph zone on highway 210 in Baxter. But official after official stressed that the zone will do no good unless area people abide by the limit and encourage others to comply.

Several area residents are concerned over possible army worms eating the leaves of their oak trees. But county extension agent Jim Rabehl says they aren't army worms and residents shouldn't worry. The caterpillars are known as “oak defoliators” and though they will strip most of the leaves, they won't permanently harm the trees.

Thomas Stuard, quartermaster third class, and Roger Dondelinger, personnelman third class, both of Brainerd, are serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, which took part recently in the exercises “Riptide III.” More than 40 ships, plus aircraft from four NATO nations participated in the exercise.
80 years ago (1942)
Oil dealers in the Brainerd area are telling drivers what to expect when gasoline rationing comes to the midwest. Based on what they see in the east, everybody will get some gasoline, and those doing essential tasks will get an extra supply. Farmers will get all the gas they need. Rationing is just to prevent waste.
100 years ago (1922)
There was excitement aplenty at the court house. Returning from the barber shop, prisoner Ernest Price made a breakaway from Deputy Ole Benson and plunged into the ravine behind the court house. Benson fired warning shots but it settled into a footrace, which Benson ultimately won when Price got winded and was returned to jail. He stands trial for assault this fall.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
