Students in Brainerd schools may have to fork over another 20 cents for breakfast and lunch this school year. A school board committee said failure to pass the increase would leave a deficit of $175,000 in the food service fund. Breakfasts will go from 90 cents to $1.10 for secondary students; lunch will go from $1.70 to $1.90.

The good news for Pres. George H.W. Bush is that he's well ahead of “undecided” and “neither.” But the bad news is that the Dispatch poll at the county fair shows him trailing well behind challenger Bill Clinton. There were even a handful of votes for former candidate Ross Perot.

Elmer Lalli, former superintendent of the Brainerd water and light department, was found guilty of six counts each of bribery and felony theft after a district court jury deliberated for almost nine hours. He was accused of selling scrap copper wire belonging to the city. Lalli's attorney, Jack Graham, says he is considering an appeal to the State Supreme Court.

(Photo) This heavy crane rolls slowly along, inching the 1,400-foot rails into place just east of Brainerd. Men then place spikes in pre-drilled holes and yet another machine drives them in place. The longer, heavier rails ensure more riding comfort and less maintenance. The section from Duluth to Brainerd will be complete next summer.

Brainerd's biggest hero, Leslie “Bullet Joe” Bush, started the season for the NY Yankees by winning seven games in a row. He now leads the team with 18 wins. In addition, he's some hitter, ranking seventh in the American League in batting average. Next to Babe Ruth, Bush is the biggest reason his team is nosing out in front of the league.
