DECEMBER 24 20 years ago (1992) On Christmas Eve there's still hope for people who'd like to put presents under a tree but can't afford a tree. Mike Gebhard at the East Brainerd Mall is giving free trees to people who don't have the money to buy one.

On Christmas Eve there’s still hope for people who’d like to put presents under a tree but can’t afford a tree. Mike Gebhard at the East Brainerd Mall is giving free trees to people who don’t have the money to buy one. So far 20 people have received free trees.

30 years ago (1982)

Not since the Great Depression have so many Christmas food baskets been needed. But the Salvation Army provided 400 baskets of turkey and all the trimmings. And the Senior Citizen Center said donations to their food shelf this season have been “amazing.”

40 years ago (1972)

St. James, defending state champion, has five finalists in Brainerd’s Paul Bunyan Wrestling Tournament. Staples, last year’s tourney winner, is close behind with four. Fighting for 3rd place are Brainerd, New York Mills, Bemidji and St. Cloud Tech.

(Photo) Even the song “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” won’t help Jeanne Palisch get what she wants for Christmas. Minus her two front teeth for some time now, Jeanne knows her Dad, Bud Palisch, will make up for them with presents.

William Pelky of Remer has been visiting his brother John in this city. William has a fine homestead and it is much used as a hunting lodge. He has a tame deer there that eats from his hand. “I have shot the deer,” he says, “but the shooting was done with a camera.”
