Take away the first quarter and Little Falls hung with the Warrior girls' basketball team. But what a first quarter. A minute into the second quarter the score stood at 26-3, and Brainerd went on to a blow-out 68-47 win. Amy Kittelson scored 16 points, followed by Brooke Rollins 15, Joan Ebnet 14 and Megan Arns 12.

Staples native Del Cerney proved himself one of the greatest swimmers ever to come out of the lakes area. The U of M senior was named All-Big Ten as he won the 50 free with a school and pool record 19.76 seconds. He finished 2nd in the 100 fly, 3rd in the 100 free and swam on four relays that finished 1st, 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Big Ten swim meet.

Judge James Preece has denied convicted firebomber John Rieck's petition for resentencing under the new state guidelines. Rieck, 25, is serving 15-30 years for the 1977 firebombing of a rural Brainerd home. The new guidelines call for 24 years, but the judge ruled the nature of Rieck's crime would have drawn an upward departure.

Thieves who again confined their efforts to three nearby businesses last weekend got $600 in cash, $500 in one stop at General Supply Co. on Washington St. The other spots hit were Brainerd Glass for $35 and Coca Cola Bottling for $60. The pattern is the same as other recent break-ins.
80 years ago (1942)
Pvt. Kenneth Davis, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Davis of 9th Ave., has been seriously wounded in the Philippines according to a telegram received from Washington, DC. Davis, who has been in the 31st Infantry for a year, is the second Brainerd man injured in the Philippines, the first being Walt Straka, of Co. A, 194th Tank Battalion.
100 years ago (1922)
The special meeting called by the Water and Light board to discuss improvements for 1922 brought out 200 people despite the bad weather. Running water mains to West Brainerd will cost $15,000 and to the Mill district will cost $12,000. Replacing leaky mains elsewhere will bring the total bond issue needed to $50,000.
