Jaime Mueller is going to get some recognition next week. The Warrior sophomore cross country skier, unranked in a coaches poll, burst past a field of 39 in sub-zero conditions to win the Section 8 title in 16 minutes, 6 seconds – 34 seconds ahead of the runnerup skier. She heads to state where she finished 32nd last year.

Brainerd civic and labor officials went to St. Paul to get straight answers on the future of BN Railroad employment here. They got news of yet another round of layoffs that could hit nearly 60 of the remaining 112 employees by the end of the year. The railroad said the cuts would not be temporary.
60 years ago (1962)
Reports dealing with possible consolidation of the Brainerd school district with Baxter and parts of the Nisswa district were approved by the Brainerd school board last night. They were against accepting any more Baxter debt than is already on the books, and feel natural ties to Nisswa make that consolidation feasible.
80 years ago (1942)
With only two days left of Victory Book Week, Brainerd is definitely short of its portion of 10 million books for men in the service. The city's quota is 700 books. The collection group says 600 books were collected, but 200 don't meet requirements for subject matter or condition. That leaves 300 to collect in two days.
100 years ago (1922)
The Gunard Erickson Post No. 10 of the World War Veterans held their regular meeting this week and there was large attendance, with several new members initiated. The post has leased club rooms over the New Park Theatre and the grand opening will be held on February 15.
