20 years ago (2002)
Last year 69 people were turned away from Brainerd's detox center due to lack of space. Supervisor Carol Stier said she'd like to double the space and is working on that with the state. The 10-bed facility is located at the Brainerd State Hospital and opened 18 months ago. The county detox center closed in 1980.
30 years ago (1992)
Warrior senior Lance Hoff won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the Section 8 swim meet to qualify for state. His mark of 21.30 seconds in the 50 set a section mark, beating the 21.50 by Del Cerney of Staples in 1988. Hoff also set a meet record of 47.16 in the 100, also beating Cerney's 1988 mark of 47.69.
40 years ago (1982)
The State Executive Council voted today to give Gov. Al Quie authority to safeguard Baxter's water supply because of an illegal dumping of herbicides. Baxter mayor Jon Main said the city is concerned its well may be contaminated because MnDOT dumped the herbicides within 1,600 feet. Tests show the well is fine now.
60 years ago (1962)
A still smoldering passenger car, and derailed tankers and flat cars, remained today after a freight train crashed into the rear of a halted passenger train just south of Backus early this morning. The crew and passengers escaped injury, including Gene Bradfield, 26, a blind student who escaped with his guide dog, Susie.
80 years ago (1942)
Draft registration of men between the ages of 20 and 45 continued today at 16 registration sites across the county. About 1,200 were expected to have registered by last night. Among them were a father, 45, and his son, 20. At least four men who registered were veterans of the first World War in 1918.
