The halls are alive with the sound of music – at Riverside School, that is. That’s the home of music teacher Lauren Nickisch, just named as Brainerd Teacher of the Year. “We love her. We think she’s the best anywhere,” said Riverside principal Cathy Engler.
30 years ago (1984)
(Photo) Gary Vetvick and Orv Tengwall have something in common – they were both victims of a motorcycle theft ring now targeted by the Minn. BCA. The machine Orv sold Gary in 1981 was stolen and the serial number altered. Orv replaced the bike with a new ’84 model.

A bankruptcy petition has been filed in district court by Donnybrooke, Inc., operator of Minnesota’s only big-time race track near Brainerd. President George Montgomery said efforts to sell the track failed. He will lose his $600,000 investment, as will others.
60 years ago (1954)
John Gagliardi, 28-year-old football coach at St. John’s Univ. will be the first outside speaker to address the Brainerd Quarterback’s Club at Club LaGuyal. Gagliardi piloted the Johnnies to a Minnesota college conference title tie in his first season at St. John’s.

The “Golden Jubilee” of the order of the Knights of Pythias will be celebrated by White Cross Lodge No. 30 at their castle hall on Feb. 13 with a program embracing song, mirth and something to eat. The Grand Chancellor of the Grand Lodge, Domain of Minn. urged attendance.
