30 years ago (1984)

A five-month undercover “buy-bust” drug probe climaxed early this morning with the arrest of 11 persons connected with sale of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines. Lawmen seized, in marijuana alone, drugs with a street value of up to $60,000.

40 years ago (1974)

A car stopped in the path of an 86-car train in Deerwood caused a three-car derailment, according to BN Railroad. The car was apparently “playing chicken.” When it didn’t respond to the train’s horn, the engineer had to slam on the brakes. The car fled.

60 years ago (1954)

The city committee on fluoridation took sharp issue with Alderman Schwendeman’s statement at the council meeting that government health groups have not approved fluoridation. Dr. Jack Echternacht listed many such groups solidly behind fluoride.

In invading C-I tonight the Warriors are expected to be on edge after a ragged performance over the still more ragged Detroit Lakes team, winning 29-25, Hoop Smith leading with 10. The Warriors prevailed over the Rangers by one point here a week ago.

100 years ago (1914)

The Brainerd-Cuyuna iron mine in the city limits of Brainerd near S. 6th Street is now 80 feet deep with its shaft work. About 400 gallons of water per minute are being pumped out, and Capt. John Martin will soon add another pump.
