Crow Wing County Sheriff Dick Ross made a three-for-the-price-of-one deal with the county board. He said he could buy three used cars for the price of one new one, and they’d be fine for administrative staff. The board agreed and he placed the order.

30 years ago (1981)

A three-judge panel of District Court judges upheld the demotion of former Brainerd Police Chief Wayne Hasty. Hasty’s attorney, Tom Ryan, declined to comment whether he would appeal the decision to the Minnesota Supreme Court.

40 years ago (1971)

A robber with a black nylon stocking over his face, and a hand in his pocket indicating a gun, held up Bud’s Off Sale liquor store on S. 6th Street. Police said $100 was taken. Owner Bud Mulroy said the man came in at 9 p.m., took the money, then ran south.

60 years ago (1951)

(Photo) About 53 Dispatch news carrier boys, both city and rural, were honored at an annual Christmas dinner party at Cave’s restaurant, hosted by H. F. McCollough, publisher. The boys got a turkey dinner, a gift and a magic show by Eldon Stevens.

80 years ago (1931)

John McKenna, superintendent of the Northwest Paper Co., today announced a signed contract by which the Brainerd mill will furnish newsprint needed by the eight newspapers controlled by the owners of the Brainerd Dispatch, totaling 1 million pounds.

100 years ago (1911)

In the four days before Christmas the local post office is said to have sold $200 worth of one-cent stamps, which were probably affixed to 20,000 Christmas cards. One firm reports having sold 12,000 cards, almost its entire stock.
