First American Bank of Brainerd is appealing to a higher court a jury’s award of $35,500 in damages to a local group that tried to purchase the former Vilo Bowling Lanes from the bank. The local group headed by “Curly” Olson attempted the purchase in 1990.

A 23-3 lead built through the first five matches helped Coach Bruce Thompson’s Warrior matmen register their second conference win, 33-15 at Willmar. Co-captains Jim Caughey and Bob Waytashek scored impressive wins at 147 and 157 pounds.

(Photo) A rancher’s dream is what Arnold Wyffels calls this home-made tractor he purchased to haul hay to his cattle during the winter. Designed and built by Willard Redemke of Staples, it has 20 forward and five reverse speeds and hauls 3,000 pounds.

Included in the list of flood control projects recommended for funding in Pres. Dwight Eisenhower’s budget is $500,000 for the “Big Ditch” project at Aitkin, now partially completed. It would divert Mississippi flood waters cross country past the city of Aitkin.

Doubt has been expressed that the man found slain near Detroit was indeed the notorious gangster Verne Miller, former Brainerd resident. The Kansas City Star supported its claim with the fact that Miller’s own father couldn’t recognize the man as his son.

The Southeast Brainerd Stitch and Chatter Club met January 7 at the home of Mrs. L.D. Greeno. Mrs. Hilmer Wilson gave a whistling solo and sang several songs, accompanied on the piano by Miss Ethel Brandt. Mrs. Greeno served a delicious lunch.
