The city of Baxter will ask Crow Wing County to sell tax-forfeited land near the Baxter Industrial Park for a relocation of the Viking Coca Cola plant in Brainerd. Sheila Wasnie of BLADC told the Baxter council that she has been working with Viking for a year.

30 years ago (1984)

(Photo) Huge, 120-ton girder spans were readied for installation yesterday by a giant crane at the Mississippi River railroad bridge in Brainerd. The 1901 bridge, receiving a 2-year, $2 million renovation, will be closed to rail traffic for a week this month.

(Photo) Merrifield’s Marathons Snowmobile Derby last weekend attracted machines of all sizes and makes with drivers from across the area. Billed as the “biggest little snowmobile race” in the state, the derby drew a huge gallery of fans in zero weather.

Mrs. Stewart Mills was named president of the Salvation Army advisory board. Joe Zumwalt is VP, Mrs. Ralph Newell, secretary and Bill McCollough, treasurer. Lt. C.D. Waters reported that $979.67 was raised during the Christmas kettle fund drive.

The Chippewa Indian council now in session at Mahnomen elected a large group to go as a delegation to Washington, DC. The group includes Ed Rogers of Walker, and the noted Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Charles Albert “Chief” Bender, originally from Brainerd.
