Though no superstore like Wal-Mart, Target or Costco has made a proposal to locate in Brainerd-Baxter, a debate was held at Central Lakes College on whether they were good for the area. Brainerd city council members Bob Olson and Gary Scheeler spoke in favor of such stores, while Ed Shaw and Chip Borkenhagen spoke against superstores.

Put a lot of people together and not everyone will be a “happy camper.” This will be the case as 2,000 camping vehicles housing 10,000 campers descend on BIR for Campvention – a week-long event. And the event means business. An extra $2.5 million will be spent in the Brainerd area – much of it for groceries.

With Danny Ongais leading the way, five drivers shattered the track record at BIR in qualifying runs for the Pepsi Grand Prix road race. With a lap time of 1:28.133 (122.54 mph) over the three-mile track, Ongais was more than six seconds faster than the four-year-old record set by Peter Gregg.

(Photo) Tom Prince, 12, will have something to show his friends back in Chicago. He landed this 6-8 largemouth at Borden Lake on a Jitterbug lure. The bass, which measured 22.5 inches long and 16 in girth, is one of the largest entered at King's Sporting Goods this summer.

Instructions relative to a “sugar bonus” of two pounds provided by the federal sugar ration board were sent to to county ration boards by telegram today. It says the regulation provides that stamp No. 7 may be used to obtain two pounds of sugar in addition to the amounts already authorized.
100 years ago (1922)
Mr. and Mrs. John Hoffbauer left Brainerd to attend the Elks National Convention in Atlantic City and will be gone two weeks. They will visit Washington, New York and other cities. John had a good letter from Brainerd native Leslie Bush (Bullet Joe), who will arrange tickets for a Yankees game when Bush is pitching.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
