For 32 years barber John Weise has been cutting hair in his tiny barber shop along Hwy 371, across the parking lot from Schaefer's Foods in Nisswa. But the little building, which has no phone, radio, TV set or bathroom, has to be removed. So Schaefer's is remodeling part of their building so the barber shop will have a new home.
30 years ago (1992)
Pent-up anger on planning and zoning issues erupted in a two-hour shouting match at the county board yesterday. Along the way the chairman of the board of adjustment resigned, and the chair of the planning commission threatened to do so. The principal shouters were county attorney Jack Graham and P&Z administrator Dave Neiman, but everyone got into the act.
40 years ago (1982)
It was a “real circus” for Brainerd police this morning as they responded to a series of vandalism incidents, attempted break-ins, a nude man running through the streets and a family of bears passing through town. Some of the vandals were caught, the bears left town quietly and the “bare” man was arrested for indecent exposure.
60 years ago (1962)
Dale Sanders, Brainerd, nationally known wildlife photographer, was featured speaker at the Optimist Club today. Sanders showed a film, “Land of the Prairie Ducks,” which won the top award for North America for contributions to conservation education. The film was five years in the making.
80 years ago (1942)
The “Miss Brainerd 1942” contest will be held at 9 p.m. tonight on the stage of the Paramount Theatre. The Brainerd Jaycees have 22 contestants who will be judged on looks and personality by four judges from out-of-state who are staying at area resorts. The girls have a choice of appearing in sport clothes or formals – no bathing suits.
100 years ago (1922)
A team of horses hauling gravel for road work north of Crosby was crossing the Mississippi bridge when a car came speeding at them. When the car would not stop, the horses crashed through the railing, did a complete somersault and landed in the river, 34 feet below. Miraculously, the wagon driver and horses were unhurt. The car sped away but his plate number was noted.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
