A Brainerd mother of two has been named the 2001 Mrs. Minnesota. Kathy Thompson, 38, was crowned over the weekend at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. More than 40 of her family and friends were there for the contest, and she said their cheering made it seem like she brought all of Brainerd with her.
30 years ago (1991)
Curbside recycling will begin Aug. 1 in Brainerd, said Mayor Bonnie Cumberland at news conference this morning. David MacArthur of SES, Inc., which employs the handicapped to process collected materials, said clear glass, newspapers, cans and No. 1 and 2 plastics will be picked up twice a month.

An appreciative audience watched Kaye Hill crown Bonnie Lee Anderson as the new Miss Brainerd for 1961-62 last night at Tornstrom Auditorium. Marie Adolphson was first runner-up and Patsy Lavoie second runner-up. Anderson, who attends the Univ. of Minn. receives a $150 scholarship, a wardrobe and other prizes.
80 years ago (1941)
Isaac Van Doren, 71, riding a bicycle from Merrifield toward a church camp in Anoka, was struck by a car just south of Brainerd last night. Van Doren, who travels everywhere on his bike, was confined to St. Joseph's Hospital overnight. He left by bus this morning for Anoka, his bike being too mangled to ride.
100 years ago (1921)
The city of Staples reports a premature celebration of the 4th of July. The sun shining through the plate glass window of the Adams and Sharkey Store set fire to a display of fireworks. They all shot off and did $1,000 damage to the building and its contents.
