Due in part to its central location, Mille Lacs gets more fishing pressure than any other lake its size in the state. But the walleye fishing is having problems. Fishing has never been better, with 20-inch plus fish dominating the catch. Problem is, the DNR harvest slot is 14-16 inches, so many larger fish are being thrown back, and a lot don't survive.

Tom Louden, of S. 6th Street, told the city council last night that he's angry. Among many things, he told the council that the owners of the Downtown Motel have been harassed by a group of Brainerd people and now by police. Police Chief Frank Ball says the motel has been harassed by a juvenile group from northeast, with 90 percent of those crimes solved.

The Brainerd VFW team chalked up its 24th win against four losses with a 12-2 victory over Sauk Rapids in six innings yesterday. Craig Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Coach Lowell Scearcy's team. Todd Vanek pitched a three-hitter and struck out three for the win.

Post office, anyone? You can have one free, as long as you move it in 30 days. The city council, which has purchased the old Brainerd post office site to be used for parking, plans to tear it down soon so the lot can be surfaced and parking meters installed. But if you move it, you can have it.

Elmer Anderson, Mayor Frank Johnson and the new Miss Brainerd Cornelia Kuebelbeck, Brainerd turned out en masse at Lum Park to welcome leaders in the Aquatennial Canoe Race on the leg south from Aitkin. The leaders by five and 1-2 minutes are Walt and Orbid Heineman from C-I.
100 years ago (1922)
Further drastic curtailment of train service on lines throughout the country has been announced due to the general rail strike, including two trains to Brainerd. They are No. 59, due here at 12:15 p.m., and No. 56 due in at 2:10 p.m. Mail delivery is being affected and other supplies are growing short.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
