A second Planned Parenthood clinic in northern Minnesota has been the target of gunfire. About 3:40 a.m. today, someone fired 5-7 shots into the Grand Rapids clinic, shattering the door and windows. It was just over two weeks ago that the Brainerd clinic was hit by gunfire. No suspect has yet been identified in either shooting.

It was Baxter history in the making – the first mayor to resign and the first woman mayor to take over the gavel. Don O'Brien stepped down early from his mayor's post because he is running for a seat on the Crow Wing Coop board. Mary Sterner was elected interim mayor by vote of the council.

Late filings have caused several local political races to develop. DeLyte Specht will oppose Sharon Peterson for county recorder; Duane Odegaard will face six-term treasurer Doug Anderson for treasurer; five-term Sheriff Chuck Warnberg faces Jim Deyo; and Judge Darrell Sears faces Bob Kautz and Marianne Milloy.
60 years ago (1962)
(Photo) Gordon Greenwood of Pequot Lakes hooked this 21-8 northern at Lake Bertha two days ago in 18 feet of water. He was using a Yellow Doll Fly and minnow combination. He entered it in the contest at Hank's Rod & Gun in Brainerd. It's the largest northern yet this summer.
80 years ago (1942)
A leave of absence from today until Sept. 1 was granted to six engineers and janitors from Brainerd public schools so they may accept defense jobs during the remainder of the summer. The superintendent was asked to search for a basketball coach to replace Don Adamson, who has entered the military.
100 years ago (1922)
The New Park Theatre will be closed after tomorrow night's last performance for a period of six or seven weeks to renovate and improve the interior of the building. The intent is to make the facility capable of handling the very finest of the high grade road shows. New and improved lighting will be included.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
