It was Baxter history in the making – the first mayor to resign and the first woman mayor to take over the gavel. Upon Mayor Don O’Brien’s announcement he was stepping down early, council member Mary Sterner was elected interim mayor by the council.
30 years ago (1982)
Stewart Kunde, a member of American Legion Post 255 in Brainerd, has been elected commander of the American Legion Department of Minnesota at its convention in Duluth. He was post commander in 1960 and has been post adjutant for 22 years.
40 years ago (1972)
They said it couldn’t happen but it did. A storm that dumped 12 inches of rain on the Brainerd area caused floodwaters so strong that culverts and bridges were washed out. Highways 10, 25 and 371 to the south were hit hard, cutting the state in half.

Due to the condition of the baseball grounds at the Fill, there will be no YMCA City Softball games there tonight. The recent deluge of rain washed out part of the field. Players and friends are asked to bring wheelbarrows and shovels to help fix the field.

A record black bass, described by A. P. Cardle as the finest and largest specimen he has seen in 17 years as game warden, was caught by Cornelius Fischer on Lake Edward. It weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces, was 21 inches long with a girth of 16 inches.

Although Dominick of Little Falls literally pitched his head off in the game with Brainerd, striking out 13 batters, costly errors, poor fielding and a lack of team play contributed to Brainerd winning by a score of 5-3. Brainerd played classy ball.
