The Brainerd Hornets 18-and-under softball team made Minn. Junior Olympic history this summer by winning the state championship in five age brackets. They captured the 18-and-under title July 13-14 and the 19-and-under on July 20-21. In previous years they had won the 12-, 14-, and 16-and-under state championships.
30 years ago (1992)
Quick, tenacious and competitive. That describes Kurt King, the 6-3, 240-pound offensive tackle for the Warrior football team who is expected to start for the Outstate team in the High School All-Star Classic tomorrow at Univ. of St. Thomas. He is the 14th Brainerd player to be named to the annual all-star game.
40 years ago (1982)
A proposed site for a heliport at the Brainerd-Crow Wing County Airport has been selected, subject to further evaluation by the airport commission and Brainerd Helicopter Service. Consultants from TKDA said the heliport site will be south of the present hangers and the structure would be 60 x 80 feet.
60 years ago (1962)
An 18-year-old wanted by law officers in two states, and also AWOL from the Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, was arrested here last night as was a 16-year-old runaway girl with him. He was driving a Ford convertible he stole in Iowa on which he put Minnesota plates from a junkyard. A loaded rifle was on the back seat.

A Crosby man, age about 21, is being held in the county jail on a charge of “selling liquor to minors” while he is being investigated for several robberies. One is at a lumber yard, two gas stations and the Cuyuna Range Creamery. A break in at the Trommald Liquor Sale yielded six quarts of liquor.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
