Break out the champagne! Madden's on Gull Lake is turning 50. An interesting fact: the resort serves up about 8,400 meals per week – coming to about 3 million meals since it opened. It has hosted every Minnesota governor, plus celebrities like Jesse Owens, Peter Graves, Nancy Lopez, Howard Cosell and FBI Director William Webster.

After more than four hours of deliberation, a county jury found Stanley Ebert guilty of second degree murder. Ebert, 47, had pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of his girlfriend after returning home from a dinner. County attorney Steve Rathke had asked the jury to find him guilty of first degree murder.

Movie star Bob Burns, who with Mrs. Burns is a summer visitor at Gull Lake, will meet news and camera men today, breaking his silence and his attempt to avoid publicity the past several weeks. Mrs. Burns has been in poor health and Bob has been trying to give her a good rest.
100 years ago (1922)
John F. Woodhead of the Woodhead Motor Co. drove from the Twin Cities to Brainerd yesterday with the first Lincoln car in the city. The price of the car is $4,250 and is considered the most beautiful model of a coupe ever seen here.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
