The action was fast and furious in the midseason championships at North Central Speedway, as Brainerd drivers prevailed. Louis Wermter paced the Pure Stock A feature, Dave Mass survived a restart to take the Wissota Street Stocks, Rick Sweet took the 20-lap Wissota Super Stocks and Pete Hines won the Wissota Modified feature.

Kurt Loftis and Curt Plante, both of Brainerd, were feature winners in stock car racing at North Central Speedway. Loftis edged out fellow Brainerd drivers Todd Wooden and John Treichler to take the Wissota Super Stock feature. Plante outraced Dan Jacobs for the Street Stock feature.

Priemesberger Arena in the town of Genola, a city of 97, will be the host of the 1981 World Horseshoe Tournament, beginning July 30 and running for 11 days. More than 1,200 entrants are expected at the 80 by 200 foot structure designed just for horseshoe pitching by owner Henry Priemesberger.
60 years ago (1961)
A youth from Anoka, 18, who attempted to outrun the Highway Patrol, stands charged with 10 offenses and $1,187 in fines today. Among the charges are: 100 mph in a 50 zone near Nisswa, 80 in a 30 zone at Pequot, and 126 in a 40 zone at Jenkins. Other charges are reckless driving and minor consuming liquor.
80 years ago (1941)
Marv Nutting today announced he was submitting his resignation as the city's recreation director. He said the press of his growing insurance business doesn't allow him to do both jobs. He was hired by the WPA as rec director, and became the city director in 1937. He has a staff of seven running softball leagues and school rec programs.
100 years ago (1921)
Ten members of the Minneapolis Rotary Club, representing Rotary International, joined by Rotarians from several other cities, met here today with the twenty charter members of the local club. After a tour of the area, they will have dinner at Grand View Lodge where the charter for the local club will be presented.
