Brainerd racers Tim O'Brien and Greg Tomberlin both won their first features of the season at North Central Speedway. O'Brien, the defending points champion, won the Wissota Super Stock. Tomberlin, a veteran ice racer, won the Mini Stock feature.

(Photo) Guy Humphrey's stay at St. Joseph's Hospital was unexpectedly brightened on his birthday when he received a birthday card from Pres. Ronald Reagan and wife Nancy. Humphrey, of Pine River, turned 90 on Sunday.

Howard Thorsen, a graduate this month from Washington High School, has been selected to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy. S/Sgt. Charles Extrand, of the 194th Tank Battalion, now at Camp Rucker, is taking the exam for appointment to West Point.

The state executive council today received a bid for a permit to prospect for iron ore on 80 acres of state land just northeast of Brainerd, near Whitely Creek. The bid was made by Holman Pearl, a mining engineer from Crosby, at a rate of 12 cents per ton.

 

100 years ago (1911)

St. Mathias parish was almost the scene of a drowning in quicksand. Vanasse and Pepin, Long Lake farmers, contracted to deepen the church well. Vanasse was at the bottom of the shaft when clay, water and quicksand boiled up, and he was pulled to safety in the nick of time.
