Michael Hunt’s first career home run was a memorable one. Hunt swatted a two-run homer over the left-center field fence in the 9th inning to give the Brainerd American Legion team a 10-8 victory over Pierz, with Brainerd thus winning its season opener.
30 years ago (1982)
(Photos) Doug Kaspar, Pequot Lakes, pulled in a 10-9 walleye from 18 feet of water while fishing with a Lindy Rig and leech. This 9-10 walleye was caught by Mike Olson, Brainerd, using a Lindy Rig and nightcrawler in 15 feet of water.

(Photo) An 11-8 walleye, largest of the season to be weighed-in in Paul Bunyan Vacationland, was caught by Mrs. Jim Leonhardt of Byron. She and her husband were fishing out of Cap’n Dee’s Piney Ridge Lodge on Whitefish Lake.

A hard-hitting Evangelical United Brethren nine not only snapped the three-game win string of Zion Lutheran in YMCA Church Softball play, they did it in five innings, pounding Zion by 21-4. Bill Marshall was perfect for EUB, going four-for-four.

City and county authorities joined in warning of the operations of two women short-change artists who have already worked their game on several merchants and resort operators here. Sheriff Little said they are traveling in a car with Kansas license plates.
100 years ago (1912)
A traveling man who wore a straw hat out at Cuyuna this week was nearly mobbed for his temerity. The Dispatch man had his lid smashed in Deerwood yesterday for daring to wear the first straw hat of the season in that community.
