20 years ago (2002)

A substitute mail route driver faces two felony counts for stealing Christmas cards with cash between Laporte and Brainerd last Christmas. He was stopped at the end of his route by a postal inspector who found 93 cards in his truck. He burned the cards from which he stole cash; he taped and delivered the others he opened. The total loss was $777.40.

60 years ago (1962)

The controversy that began two days ago when six residents appeared at the city council to protest removal of the islands on 8th Street has grown. A petition to stop removal – which is part of a street renovation – now has signatures from 90 percent of the property owners, in response to a council statement that six wasn't a majority.

80 years ago (1942)

Boasting one of the finest lineups ever seen in Brainerd, Walt Deming's Brainerd All-Stars pounded the Inland Steel softball team from Ironton for 15 hits off pitcher “Bull Montana” Lubovich in an 18-0 victory. Benny Foster and Sam Tollefson combined to pitch a no-hitter for the All-Stars, who also won the second game 8-5.

100 years ago (1922)

Anyone having a single or double room to rent should please notify the housing committee in room 210 of the Iron Exchange building. They will need a good list of rooms to accommodate the many people coming back to Brainerd for the city's grand 50th Anniversary celebration.
