In the county's first contested race of the 2002 campaign, Deputy Eric Klang, 36, will challenge Sheriff Dick Ross for the top law enforcement post this fall. Klang is a graduate of Hibbing Community Collge law enforcement program and started his career with the Heartland Drug Task Force here.

BN Railroad employees in Brainerd this morning said they were still awaiting word on whether a railroad strike will be called at midnight tonight. The machinists union in Brainerd said that negotiations continued today. Main issue is they have been working without a contract for five years.

(Photo) Terry Holm (right) and Kevin Stunek completed Grandma's Marathon in Duluth last weekend in times of 2:39.50 and 2:45.22 to lead a contingent of 17 local runners. Stunek got stomach cramps at 19 miles and Holm had leg cramps at 21 miles to slow them down.

Former Gov. C. Elmer Anderson said today he will seek the 6th District Congressional seat. He will file at 10 a.m. in the Sec. Of State's office but made no further comment. He is the fourth Republican to enter the GOP primary. Anderson served six terms as lieutenant governor and was governor from 1951 to 1955.

The Navy Relief fund drive that opened in Brainerd last week has already raised $600 of its $1,200 quota. The All-Star softball game last week was one of the fundraisers, drawing a crowd of 500 fans. Lt. Gov. C. Elmer Anderson, Brainerd, is chair of the drive.

Spruce trees were planted this afternoon around the summer office of the Chamber of Commerce at the corner of 6th and Laurel Streets. Tomorrow evening, Carl Wright and his committee will pick up a truckload of sod to place around the building, making it attractive before the 50th Celebration visitors arrive.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
