The city council will hold a special meeting to discuss accusations of racism against Brainerd police. Brainerd resident Sonya Lewis made the accusation after a Memorial Day fight at Lum Park involving 30-50 people. After an incident in March, Lewis claimed the police, the mayor's office, Brainerd High School, Brainerd HRA and several local businesses discriminated against her family.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That was the consensus of those attending a meeting of the Brainerd Charter Commission regarding the autonomy of the PUC. One attendee said there should be limits on the amount of money the PUC could hold in reserve, but most said the PUC has done well and should not come under jurisdiction of the council.
40 years ago (1982)
A breakthrough in negotiations between the city council and the Rural Fire Assn. ended an impasse that began in April. The current agreement, based on valuation, has the association paying Brainerd $43,062 per year. Payments in 1983 through 1985 will increase by the consumer price index.

Every was afflicted with polio 10 years ago and, for a time he was paralyzed from the neck down. He graduated here from high school and junior college and now has a job as bookkeeper at Thompson Concrete here.

Judge Richard Ebert, who was elected special judge in 1939, became municipal judge when Judge James Warner died. He has now relinquished that position to enter the armed forces. His position will be taken by M. Eleanor Nolan, who will move up from her position as special judge.

People are quickly signing up for sprinkling agreements with the Water and Light Board, whereby a special rate is secured for water to be used for sprinkling lawns and gardens during the months of June, July, August and September.

It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
