This time Bill Jones may get it right. Jones, pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church in Deerwood, is retiring for the second time. The first time was back in 1980 when he was 62. It didn’t stick. Now he’s 74 and this time he figures it will.
30 years ago (1982)
Karl Krause, 77, of Peoria, Ill, celebrates a golden anniversary this year – 50 years of coming to Lake Margaret and 50 consecutive years of buying a fishing license. Actually 49 years for the license; Marv Koep at Nisswa Bait picked up the tab for Krause this year.

40 years ago (1972)
The Brainerd City Council, in a surprise move, voted not to grant renewal of two liquor licenses in an apparent attempt to get more clothes on female entertainers. On another issue, Tom Loudon, owner of Brainerd Beauty College, made charges of police brutality.
60 years ago (1952)
James Bell of Route 6, Brainerd, is recovering in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a narrow escape from drowning. He was going north on Hwy 371 when another car forced him off the road into a water-filled ditch. The new fire department resuscitator saved his life.
80 years ago (1932)
(Adv.) Forsberg Cottages and Cabins on North Round Lake announces its opening! Cottages by the week - $14.00 to $27.50, including silverware, linen, electricity, boats, ice and firewood. New dining room, steak and chicken dinners are the specialty.
100 years ago (1912)
An M & I Railroad passenger, jauntily swinging his little case of fresh eggs, came to grief near the ticket office when a staple pulled out, the handle came off and the eggs dashed to the ground. Egg yolks oozed out of the case and decorated the platform.
