Jenny Johnson of Brainerd finished fifth in the state 100-meter hurdle finals with a time of 15.83 seconds. She credited her years competing against state record holder Anna Ratzloff of Little Falls for giving her the impetus to excel in the event.

Rep. Don Samuelson, a 12-year Minnesota DFL House veteran, announced that he will leave that position to run for the District 13 Senate seat. At the same time, political newcomer Tom Isle, Brainerd, said he would seek Samuelson’s 13A House seat.

Thieves took $537 from Van’s Café yesterday, but police are puzzled as to how it was accomplished. The café was closed yesterday and the theft was discovered last night, but no sign of entry has been found. Van’s has posted a reward in the case.

Minnesota is in dire need of a new hospital for the mentally retarded if it hopes to whittle down a long waiting list for admission. That finding was the highlight of a study released today by a Minnesota state council that has Brainerd high on its list of possible sites.

Friends of Senator Chris Rosenmeier, who served five terms in the Minnesota legislature and who mourn his death last week, announced that his son, Gordon, would seek his father’s seat for the remainder of his term. It was his father’s dying wish, they said.

Wednesday night’s concert of the Brainerd City Band at Depot Park revealed the high class of music the band is now interpreting. The softer passages, however, were almost obliterated by the crashing of freight cars and snorting of switch engines.
