Crow Wing County commissioners are asking the legislature to take no action on the proposed treaty settlement between the state and the Mille Lacs Band of Obibwe. They asked not to approve the treaty in its present form and to seek more negotiations.

A murder warrant has been issued for former Merrifield resort owner Loyal Lundstrom, 59, whose wife was shot to death at their home in Cisco, Texas. Lundstrom’s conviction for killing his first wife here in 1967 was later overturned by the Minn. Supreme Court.

Trailing by 17 points (67-50) with six minutes to go, Jerry Vanek’s Warriors brought the Halenbeck Hall crowd to its feet with a rocketing surge to a 71-71 tie in regulation. But Brainerd fell just short, falling to Little Falls 79-77 in double-overtime.

Roosevelt Field is again Roosevelt Field. The school board vote to rescind the action taken in November, naming the football field “Cobb-LaBar Field,” was taken seconds after the meeting opened. The second action, renaming the field Roosevelt Field, followed.

Only a smoldering mass of ruins catapulted into the basement, and two chimneys standing like spires, remained of the St. Francis Catholic Church which burned last night. Firemen suffered frostbite from the high winds and 10 below zero temperatures.
100 years ago (1913)
Some traveling man placed a paper snake equipped with a spring device under a plate in the Ransford Hotel dining room. When the girl lifted her plate the toy snake flew up and struck her in the head. She fainted, revived a half hour later, and then fainted again.
