The Brainerd Bears put in place the first part of their personnel puzzle when they hired Mitch Zwolensky to manage their first team in the North Central Baseball League. Zwolensky had been pitching coach of the Northern League’s Duluth Dukes.
30 years ago (1984)
Goalie Steve Ebinger was voted MVP for the Brainerd Hockey Team. 1984-85 leaders will be Mike Ross as captain, with alternate captains Adam Extrand and Chris Olson. Ebinger’s outstanding season earned him a berth on the region’s first team.

(Photo) Warrior hopefuls in the state boys’ gymnastics meet at William Arena are seniors Dave Bye and co-captain Bob Hartman. Both Bye on trampoline and Hartman on rings had second-place finishes at the region tournament at St. Cloud Apollo.

The school board has granted a teachers’ union request to add an 11th step to the salary schedule. They also raised athletic dept. salaries by from $25 to $250 and gave Supt. Nordgaard a $300 raise. Coach for football goes to $700, and basketball to $800.

(Edit.) Apparently, the state game and fish department doesn’t know Crow Wing County is a part of Minnesota or, that it abounds in wildlife and pays the most in fish and game license fees. Because it will not appoint a permanent and resident game warden here.
100 years ago (1914)
George Bertram, who runs a switch engine in the rail yards, has been laying off several months and said he would not go back to work until the robins returned. Today the yard crew saw a robin on the fence at the depot and told Bertram he’d better find his overalls.
