Brainerd aldermen gave a 6-2 go-ahead to the issuance of $9.6 million in revenue bonds to help finance the Westgate Mall expansion. Baxter had voted in favor. The dissenting councilmen agreed with downtown businessmen who said it financed their competition.

Cliff Carlson representing the forestry department and Larry Shaw from the Minn. PCA met with the Baxter City Council to discuss regulations for open burning. The council also hired a part-time police officer at a rate of $2.75 per hour plus clothing allowance.

Coach Fred Kellett’s Warriors are state tournament bound again, thanks to an exciting, 58-53 win over Alexandria in the Region 6 basketball tourney. Sparking the team were a pair of backcourt demons, Rod Skoog and Roger Adair, who hit 41 of Brainerd’s 58 points.

Losing team in the Brainerd American Legion post membership drive faced time in the city jail after Legion members voted last night to impose a sentence on the losers. Just what charge they will face isn’t known. The goal was to bring in 100 new members.

Charles Dryden, a Chicago sports writer covering spring training at Jacksonville, Fla., described in picturesque language how the world champion Athletics mauled the Chicago Cubs, 6-2. Joe “Bullet” Bush pitched the last five innings and that closed the door.
