A 28-year-old Brainerd man, convicted of attempted murder in a stabbing at the Iron Rail Saloon, was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison and immediately punched his defense attorney in the face. Attorney Max Ruttger was knocked to the floor, bleeding from his mouth and nose.

30 years ago (1984)

The makeup of a special panel that will decide the fate of Brainerd’s alternative fluoride plan was named today, prompting a long-time fluoride critic to speak of a “stacked deck.” The six-member panel includes the head of the American Dental Assn. and other fluoride advocates.

40 years ago (1974)

Martin J. Phillips, the oldest man born in Brainerd and still living in this area, died yesterday at age 93. His parents homesteaded here after the Civil War and he was born here on Nov. 10, 1880. He lived at Gull River as a child, and worked as a logging camp cook and a teamster.

60 years ago (1954)

Earl Norwood of Brainerd was named district star farmer at the annual banquet of the Minnesota Future Farmers of America at the University of Minnesota. Norwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.B. Norwood of Route 2, Ft. Ripley, was the first Brainerd boy thus honored.

80 years ago (1934)

A blinding dust storm drove the Brainerd-Little Falls Muskies and Fargo-Moorhead Twins to cover after the 7th inning, with the Twins winning 9-3. Many of the runs were due to home runs that were carried over the fence by the raging wind.

100 years ago (1914)
